Behind the numbers
How the flooring calculation works
Required coverage = floor area × (1 + waste % ÷ 100)
Boxes = required coverage ÷ box coverage, rounded up
Purchased coverage = whole boxes × box coverage
Rounding happens once after combining your sections. Internal calculations retain precision; displayed areas use up to two decimals. Purchase-rounding surplus is purchased coverage minus required coverage. Expected leftover before cuts is purchased coverage minus the measured floor area; some of that material will be consumed by cuts, defects and waste.
Underlayment rolls = required coverage ÷ roll coverage, rounded up. Baseboard pieces = (actual perimeter − openings) ÷ piece length, rounded up. Baseboard does not use the flooring waste percentage. Transition strips use your entered whole count.
Example: a 12 × 14 ft room
The floor is 168 sq ft. Adding 10% waste gives 184.8 sq ft. At 20 sq ft per box, the calculated requirement is 9.24 boxes: buy 10 whole boxes, covering 200 sq ft.
That is 15.2 sq ft above the waste-adjusted requirement, or 32 sq ft above the floor area before cuts. At $45 per box and 8% tax, the flooring total is $486.
Optional materials in this example
100 sq ft rolls require 2 rolls. A 52 ft perimeter minus 3 ft of doors needs 49 ft of baseboard: 7 pieces at 8 ft each, totaling 56 ft. Plan cuts before buying.
Flooring planning questions
How do I measure an L-shaped room?
Divide it into rectangles that do not overlap, measure each, and add them as sections. For example, 12 × 10 ft plus 6 × 8 ft totals 168 sq ft. Enter the actual outer wall perimeter separately for baseboard.
Is 10% waste always enough?
No. It is an editable example. Match the allowance to the product instructions, installation pattern and room layout; diagonal and complex cuts can change the amount needed.
Can I combine rooms with different flooring?
Only combine rooms using the same product and box coverage. Calculate and download separate lists for different products, finishes or colors.
Does expected leftover mean reusable material?
No. It is the purchased area above the measured floor area before installation. Cuts, damaged pieces and unusable offcuts consume part of it. Purchase-rounding surplus is shown separately.
Why is the full cost unavailable?
Every purchased material needs a price for a full total. Blank prices remain unknown; zero is accepted as free. A known-price subtotal includes only the prices you entered. Tax is your editable arithmetic assumption.
Can I use metric measurements?
Yes. Switching units converts room dimensions, box and roll coverage, perimeter, openings and piece length. Prices remain per box, roll, piece or strip in the selected currency.
How do I save the estimate?
