Sod rolls and pallets for a 1,000 sq ft lawn
Practical calculations and purchasing considerations for your project. Adjust the assumptions using the free Sod Calculator.
Sod is sold in different roll, slab, and pallet sizes. There is no single reliable number of rolls per pallet, so check the square-foot coverage quoted by the seller. The calculation starts with the lawn area, adds an allowance for trimming, and rounds up to whole sale units.
Example: 1,000 sq ft lawn with 5% extra
A 40 × 25 ft rectangular lawn covers 1,000 sq ft. With 5% extra, the target is 1,000 × 1.05 = 1,050 sq ft.
If a supplier's individual sod roll covers 10 sq ft, you need 1,050 ÷ 10 = 105 rolls. If a different supplier offers pallets covering 450 sq ft each, 1,050 ÷ 450 = 2.33, rounded up to 3 pallets. These are hypothetical supplier sizes for demonstrating the math, not universal sod packaging.
Measure your lawn accurately
Split an irregular yard into rectangles and other measurable sections. Subtract patios, planting beds, and walkways that will not receive sod. Add sections together before applying a reasonable cutting allowance. Heavy curves or many obstacles may justify a different allowance.
What can change the order?
Confirm your grass variety, delivery date, product coverage, local installation conditions, and storage time. Sod is perishable; coordinate installation with delivery rather than ordering far ahead.
