Sand for a 12 × 16 ft paver patio

Practical calculations and purchasing considerations for your project. Adjust the assumptions using the free Sand Calculator.

A paver patio usually needs a carefully prepared aggregate base and a separate, relatively thin bedding layer. Sand for paver joints is a different material and should not be counted as bedding sand. The quantities below estimate bedding sand only; follow your paver system’s installation specifications for material type and compacted depth.

Example: 12 × 16 ft patio with a 1-inch bedding layer

Area = 12 × 16 = 192 sq ft. One inch is 1 ÷ 12 ft. Volume = 192 × (1 ÷ 12) = 16 cu ft, or 16 ÷ 27 = 0.593 cubic yards before extra material.

With a 10% planning allowance, 16 × 1.10 = 17.6 cu ft or 0.652 cubic yards. If the sand bag yields exactly 0.5 cu ft, 17.6 ÷ 0.5 = 35.2, so round up to 36 bags. If your supplier sells bulk sand in 0.5-yard increments, this example rounds up to 1.0 cubic yard. Check supplier increments before ordering.

What changes the amount?

Doubling the bedding layer from 1 to 2 inches doubles the sand volume. But more bedding sand is not a substitute for correcting a poorly prepared base. Sloped or irregular areas may need separate measurements; use the actual bedding thickness required by the product.

What is not included?

Aggregate base layers, edge restraints, joint or polymeric sand, excavation, compaction losses, and drainage design are separate considerations. For joint sand, use the paving product’s coverage instructions; joint width and paver thickness affect consumption.

Before placing an order

Check bag volume or supplier density, confirm your installation design, and do not use an assumed wet-sand weight to purchase by the ton. Calculate your custom area and depth in the Sand Calculator; use the Paver Patio Calculator for pavers and other materials.

Use your exact measurements

These examples are for planning, not project specifications. Input your own area, product packaging and allowances for a more useful estimate.
